“Caring for the Caregiver” Workshop – Stop Senior Hunger

Kathryn Murphy, RN, MSN, CMC, owner of Comfort Keepers serving Jacksonville and the surrounding areas, was a guest speaker at the “Caring for the Caregiver” Workshop on February 12, 2011. The workshop, provided at the Ramada Inn in Mandarin, was sponsored by Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and the Caregiver Coalition. Various topics were presented by subject matter experts. Ms. Murphy spoke on senior nutrition and addressed ways to encourage healthy eating habits with seniors that often have diminished interests or abilities to eat.

Now that we are in the holiday season, many adult children will be traveling to visit with an aging mother or dad that may live hundreds or even thousands of miles away. We often take time during the holidays to make that “annual visit back home to family.” Each year may become more difficult as we watch a loved one advance in years and have difficulties trying to keep the same level of lifestyle they are accustomed. An adult child may feel guilty that they don’t make it “back home more often,” but with demands placed on their own lives by family and career, trips back home often get spaced further apart by necessity not by desire.
